Pathway Programs

Not everyone goes directly from high school to university. Our students come from a variety of places and life situations. Starting or resuming study is always exciting, but it can also be daunting for students.

At the University of Tasmania we’ll help you get the skills you need to pursue a university degree. We offer a wide range of preparatory and pathway programs, as well as short foundation programs, to assist in the transition to university.

Pathways for domestic students

If you’re considering studying at university but feel you may need additional skills, confidence and knowledge about university study before commencing a course, then the University Preparation Program is for you. This program has been specifically designed to support mature age students, those who did not complete year 11 and 12, and students currently enrolled in a degree that need additional support.

If you’re an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student, the Murina Pathway Program is available to assist you with the skills and knowledge to succeed in an undergraduate degree. This program provides access to 'taster' units and aims to build academic skills such as study, communication, writing and computer skills.

Are you starting at university and want to develop the essential skills required for independent learning and success at University, such as critical thinking, critical reading and academic writing? The Unistart program introduces you to the skills needed and expectations of the academic environment.

If you haven’t met the general entry requirements or want a more supported entry, the Diploma of University Studies is a great option which combines preparatory and faculty-based foundation units in various disciplines.

If you need an alternative entry pathway, are interested in a short degree structure to get a taste of university, an Associate Degree provides an opportunity to gain foundation knowledge in a specific area of study.

Are you currently in high-school and want to study university-level units at the same time or in addition to their TCE studies? The University of Tasmania’s College Program is designed to extend and reward hard-working Year 11 and 12 students by allowing them to study units at University. Not only is this a great introduction to university study, units through this program have no HECS fees and can contribute to Associate Degree, Degree or Diploma programs.

Pathways for international students

Whether you need to improve your English to qualify for further study, or to enhance job opportunities, or just out of interest, we have an English Language Program that will suit you. The University of Tasmania’s English Language Centre delivers English courses designed to meet the needs of international students by providing direct entry programs into degree courses and assisting in International English Language Testing System (IELTS) preparation.

Are you an international student and need to upgrade your academic skills to meet the entry requirements for an undergraduate degree? The Foundation Studies Program provides you with these skills and successful completion of gives direct entry to all undergraduate degree courses with the exception of Medicine.
