Bruny Island - Neck Improvements

The Tasmanian Government has committed to improving the condition of approximately 2.5km section of road at the Neck on Bruny Island.

The upgrades are being delivered jointly by the Department of State Growth and Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service and include widening and sealing the final 2.5 kilometres of Bruny Island Main Road to provide a consistent road environment and improve safety. A larger car park at the Truganini Lookout at The Neck will have safer entry and exit points and spaces for 24 vehicles as well as bus parking to better accommodate visitors at busy times.

A dedicated wildlife zone will also be created for the resident penguins and shearwaters, including penguin tunnels under the road, fencing and signage. The Neck is a sensitive habitat and breeding environment for Little Penguins and Shearwaters and an important tourist attraction for the island.

Access to the existing car park and The Neck walkway will be closed for the duration of construction and there will be some disruption to traffic with speed restrictions and altered traffic conditions.

Road users are reminded to comply with all traffic management and allow extra time for their journey, particularly when planning to meet a ferry.

Works are due to be completed in December 2017, ahead of the main visitor season.

This project is on the Bruny Island Main Road at the Neck, approx 3.5km north of Adventure Bay turnoff.
