Sport and Recreation
Monday, 11 November
The start of Water Safety Week 2013 provides an excellent opportunity to explore the range of safe water activities available around Tasmania.
Yachting, surf lifesaving, swimming, kayaking and canoeing are all activities on offer in Tasmania, so there is something for everyone, from the beach, to the yacht club and the local swimming pool.
Water Safety Week is a great example of our sport and recreation and other community organisations working closely with state and local governments in the best interests of the whole community.
The Tasmanian Government, through Sport and Recreation Tasmania, provides $30 000 each year to support the activities of the Tasmanian Water Safety Council.
The Tasmanian Water Safety Council encourages participation, and more importantly safe participation in water activities.
Two organisations today also received awards for their demonstrated commitment to increasing water safety: the Tasmanian Jet Sport Boating Club; and the Freycinet Volunteer Marine Rescue Association Inc/Coast Guard Freycinet.
The two organisations were presented their awards by Ms Rebecca White MP and water safety campaigner Laurie Lawrence.
