Champion fullback Verdun Howell has joined fellow Tasmanians Darrel Baldock and Ian Stewart from the legendary 1966 St Kilda team, as a member of the Tasmanian Sporting Hall of Fame.

The Minister for Sport and Recreation, Michelle O’Byrne, today congratulated the Brownlow Medallist on his induction at a ceremony in Launceston.

“Verdun Howell is rightly celebrated as a key member of the iconic St Kilda team, which boasted a trio of Tasmania’s greatest footballers, during a golden era for the club.

“Verdun is also recognised as a player that helped revolutionise the role of fullback, creating the template for the modern attacking fullback.”

Verdun Howell joins other VFL/AFL greats such as Royce Hart, Brent Crosswell, Rodney Eade, Alastair Lynch, Roy Cazaly and Peter Hudson as a member of the Tasmanian Sporting Hall of Fame.

“Verdun has achieved great personal success, elevated to AFL icon status and selected in the St Kilda and Tasmanian teams of the century.

“He has inspired generations of young footballers looking to emulate his spectacular style of play that was characterised by glorious kicking and superb overhead marking.”

Ms O’Byrne said the St Kilda vice-captain also demonstrated great courage, none more so than overcoming a broken jaw to play in the 1966 grand final.

“The Tasmanian Sporting Hall of Fame recognises the abilities of our great athletes as well as their determination, discipline, and sense of fair play shared by all sporting champions.”
