The City of Hobart has developed a new Strategy to direct all aspects of bushfire risk management in the Hobart City Council area.

The Draft Bushfire Management Strategy builds on the many ways the City of Hobart is already working to manage bushfire risk, and outlines the future directions and possible initiatives.

The draft strategy is open for comment until 14 May 2014. The City of Hobart welcomes submissions from all interested parties.

Draft Bushfire Management Strategy

The Strategy is divided into five broad areas:

1. Statutory planning - building and subdividing in bushfire-prone areas

2. Land management - how the City of Hobart manages it’s bushland reserves (fuel reduction burning, fire breaks and trails)

3. Regulatory responsibilities - the Council’s legislative compliance and enforcement responsibilities that relate to bushfire risk (fire hazards on private land, weeds and permit compliance)

4. Community resilience building - how the Council can assist the residents of Hobart to understand bushfire risk and improve their ability to cope.

5. Emergency management - how bushfire risk is incorporated into the Council’s emergency management and response planning

For each of the five areas, the strategy identifies goals and challenges and lists the current activities. Each section also has a series of possible new actions to expand on the current activities.
