Joan enters politics after an extensive and successful career in business.
Joan was educated at The Friends’ School in Hobart. She is married to Rod and has two adult children.
She trained as a kindergarten teacher and taught for eight years while raising a family. Making a career change in 1984 to the fledgling financial advice industry, Joan went on to be a licensee and responsible officer for her own businesses as well as managing the financial advisory arms of public companies.
Joan came to national prominence in the industry when as Chairman of the Practitioners Division of The Financial Planning Association of Australia she lead the transition and implementation of the lifting of the professional standard to the current level of Certified Financial Planner (CFP®).
As a fourth generation Tasmanian Joan knows the issues and people of the North West and West Coasts. She is committed to directly addressing the crisis facing the region in the loss of jobs and opportunity. She founded ‘Unlock Tasmania’ in 2012 to push back against the vocal minority seeking to lock-up vast areas of Tasmania. Joan has spoken at, as well as organised, large rallies and street marches to ensure the voice of the majority in this region is heard.
Joan has held a number of company directorships and is an active member of Rotary. In 2013 Joan chaired a successful fund-raising project ‘Give Toby Wheels’ which raised $75,000 in just 119 days to achieve the projects goals on-time and on-budget. As a result of its success, this project has been extended and is now providing accessible community transport in three locations in the region.
Joan currently campaigning full-time and lives at Somerset.
