Intermodal freight mostly refers to the movement of containerised freight via multiple transport mechanisms, e.g road, rail or sea.
TasRail is responsible for the hard storage and movement of containerised freight both within Tasmania and to port of export.
Last year TasRail transported more than 34,000 TEU of general freight containers, which represents an increase of 64% on the previous year. The majority of the increase came from the Hobart to Burnie service.
The recent approval of our new Bell Bay terminal will allow TasRail to increase its freight volumes in addition to offering hard stand facilities along with other ancillary services.
