Occupational Licensing

The Occupational Licensing Act 2005 licences -

  • electricians;
  • plumbers;
  • gas-fitters;
  • automotive gas-fitters; and
  • those who contract for electrical, plumbing, gas-fitting and automotive gas-fitting work.

There are two types of licences -

  • practitioner's licence
  • contractor's licence.

There is also a "nominated manager" - a practitioner who is selected by the contractor to be responsible for the work carried out under the contractor's licence.  The nominated manager -

  • may be required to complete additional units of competency or qualifications to be eligible to be a nominated manager; and
  • must hold a licence in the relevant class of work carried out under the contractor's licence.

The National Occupational Licensing System (NOLS) is due to commence for plumbers, gas-fitters and electricians in the latter half of 2013. Tasmania will be joining this system.

When the NOLS commences, those occupations currently regulated under the Occupational Licensing Act which are not regulated by NOLS, e.g. automotive gas-fitting, will continue to be regulated by Tasmania. Further information will be provided as matters become clearer.
