The new national system for domestic commercial vessel safety commenced on 1 July 2013.

State and the Territory marine safety agencies will be responsible for the effective day-to-day operation of the National System under delegation from the National Regulator.

Responsibility for regulation of waterways, the management of ports and associated issues such as classifying waters, setting speed limits and regulating alcohol consumption will remain with the State and Territory marine safety agencies.
