MAIB

Road Safety

The MAIB has an important role in contributing to the reduction of the incidence and impact of road trauma in Tasmania and provides funding for a range of road safety activities.

The Road Advisory Council (RSAC)

The Road Safety Advisory Council (formerly the Road Safety Task Force) is a joint initiative of the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources, Tasmania Police and the MAIB and is fully funded by the MAIB. Since its establishment in 1996, MAIB funding of the RSAC is more than $30M with current funding in excess of $3.0M per annum.

Since the inception of the RSAC, the number of serious injury claims received by the MAIB has decreased consistently relative to the number of vehicles registered in Tasmania. Legislation introduced over this period has also had a positive impact on reducing the number of serious injuries.

The RSAC has significantly grown in profile and research conducted has concluded that the RSAC is perceived by the Tasmanian community as the premier independent face of road safety.

The current funding commitment extends to 31 December 2014.

Motorcycle Rider Training

The MAIB provides funding of $50,000 p.a. to subsidise Road Skills Refresher Courses for Tasmanian motorcyclists.  To book a place on one of these courses please contact one of the following providers:

Infrastructure

The MAIB continues to monitor the outcome of the road infrastructure projects funded through Tasmania’s Black Spot Program.

The MAIB committed $1.0 million per annum over three years to the State Black Spot Program. The initial projects commenced in 2006/07 and involved the installation of barriers in the central median in both northern and southern Tasmania.
