![]() | ![]() | Arrangements for Importing Wildlife into TasmaniaThe Tasmanian Government has developed administrative and management arrangements for importing wildlife from mainland Australia into Tasmania. The arrangements are outlined in the Policy and Procedures for the Import, Movement and Keeping of Vertebrate Wildlife in Tasmania (the Policy).A risk analysis approach is used to ensure that the imports do not represent an unacceptable level of risk to the State. The Policy requires that each species must be risk assessed before it will be included on the list of species that can be imported into the State. People seeking to import species on the list of permitted imports will be required to demonstrate that they meet any conditions that will apply to the import, keeping and movement of those species in Tasmania. Risk assessment will be used to categorise species as either extreme, serious, moderate or low threat to Tasmania and to identify management controls that take into account the level of threat posed by a species to the Tasmanian environment, primary industries and public. The risk assessment methodology used has been developed nationally, and applied by other Australian states. Separate arrangements exist for wildlife proposed for import into Australia from overseas. Imports will not be permitted into Tasmania from overseas unless they meet national requirements. The requirements of both the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and the Quarantine Act 1908 must be met before the importation of wildlife into Tasmania is permitted. The public has the opportunity to comment on proposals to change the list of wildlife that can be imported into Tasmania. These proposals can be viewed at Species Profiles for Comment. These arrangements have been developed following a review of Tasmania's wildlife import arrangements conducted by EcoLogical Australia. See also:
