Species Profiles for Comment

As part of the process for assessing whether a species should be added to the list of species that can be imported into Tasmania, the community is invited to view all new Species Profiles.

We invite comment on the technical information provided in the Species Profile. Animal welfare issues are assessed under the Animal Welfare Act 1993 - see Animal Welfare for more information.

The species profile(s) linked below have been provided by a third party. Fallow deer are a medium sized deer with a wide distribution, occurring on all continents with the exception of Antarctica. Fallow deer is the only deer species currently present within Tasmania, it has two recognised sub-species, Dama dama dama and Dama dama mesopotamia. Although present in Tasmania, it has not been imported into the state for some years. The import of the species has been proposed to allow new genetic material to increase the viability of deer farming.

The risk assessment is to be based on the species profile, however subsequent management decisions regarding the potential import of fallow deer will follow the risk assessment. DPIPWE welcomes submissions on the species profile itself and on the future management of fallow deer imports into Tasmania.
