Agenda for Children and Young People

Agenda for Children and Young People cover

There can be no greater task for our community than nurturing, educating and protecting Tasmanian children and young people. They are our future parents and workers and those who will have the responsibility for leading our State.

The Tasmanian Government has identified the development of improved policies and service delivery arrangements for children, young people and their families as a high priority.

To assist in this work, the Agenda for Children and Young People will set out key directions for the coming decade. It will assist in determining the sort of environment we wish our children to grow up in and will encourage us to adopt a common set of outcomes around which we can align our effort.

Community Consultation

A consultation paper was prepared to engage the community in a discussion about the Agenda, particularly those who have responsibility for the health and wellbeing of Tasmania’s young people, including both government and non-government service providers.

A consultation period was open between November 2010 to February 2011, during which time three forums were held around the state attended by nearly 80 people, and a youth-specific forum, attended by 110 people, was held in Launceston. A further 80 written submissions were also received.

The consultation period closed on 1 February 2011, and the comments were collated into a Consultation Feedback Report which informed the development of the 10 year Agenda.

To support the consultation process in the development of the Agenda, the Community Development Division approached young people to listen to their views and issues to ensure young people have their say on what will directly affect them in the future. Office for Children

The Office for Children in the Department of Health and Human Services was established to coordinate and lead the Tasmanian Government’s implementation of the Agenda. On 7 July 2011, the Office for Children officially launched the Agenda, titled Our Children, Our Young People, Our Future.

Our Children Our Young People Our Future is Tasmania's Agenda for Children and Young People and it is all about action. It is about making sure that Tasmanian children and young people are nurtured, educated and protected to enable them to realise their full potential in life.

Role of the Community Development Division

To support the implementation of the Agenda, the Community Development Division is tasked with developing a cross-agency strategy for the engagement of children and young people in decisions that affect them. This work will involve the Division consulting across Government and with children and young people to ensure that they are at the centre of policies and services being developed for them.
