Contact Centres, Manufacturing, Consultancies
The business services and contact centre industry employs more than 5,300 people in Tasmania and enjoys jobs growth of around 300 per year. The Tasmanian contact centre industry sector contributes in excess of $150 million in wages and a further $9 million in payroll tax to the Tasmanian economy.
Tasmania's innovation and creativity is evident in the variety of services and products generated by a relatively small community.
The Tasmanian manufacturing sector employs about 23,000 people and has an industry turnover of approximately $6 billion. The sector has performed strongly in recent years, lifting production, increasing employment and boosting export growth. A shortage of skilled labour and an ageing workforce are challenges for the sector, which includes world-competitive businesses producing communications technology, fibreglass components, polar shelters and lightning protection technology. One of the strongest growing areas is the manufacture of machinery and equipment, including heavy engineering, mining equipment, marine and electrical products.
Service businesses support operators in all sectors of the economy, as well as developing their own exportable skills. The natural environment and the human responses it generates are a central theme for Tasmania's brand. Environmental Science is a sought-after course at the University of Tasmania and environmental consultancy services are growing export commodities.
