Greater Launceston Metropolitan Passenger Transport Plan

The Tasmanian Urban Passenger Transport Framework identifies Metropolitan Transport Plans as key initiative to ensure that investment in the transport system is matched by supportive land use planning decisions.

The Tasmanian Government has allocated $200,000 from the Passenger Transport Innovation Fund to develop a Greater Launceston Metropolitan Passenger Transport Plan. The Plan will guide future passenger transport development and investment in Greater Launceston.

The project will be conducted to achieve following project specific outcomes:

  • Shared understanding of existing land use and household travel patterns
  • Confirmation of existing passenger transport challenges and opportunities in Greater Launceston
  • Identification and agreement on likely areas of demographic change, and changes in household travel patterns, to 2030
  • Identification and prioritisation of projects capable of contributing to the achievement of the Framework objectives; and
  • Agreement between major stakeholders on the recommendations of the the Passenger Transport Plan and the high priority actions to be implemented.

DIER is working closely with Launceston metropolitan councils and passenger transport service providers to develop the Greater Launceston Metropolitan Passenger Transport Plan. The Plan will provide recommendations for improving the passenger transport system.

Background Report

The Background Report describes the current passenger transport system and the factors that influence its use including land use planning, demographics and travel patterns.

The report identifies current gaps and problems with the passenger transport system, in order to inform the development of options to improve the system.

This report has been developed based on a review of previous reports, analysis and stakeholder input.

Problems Identification Summary Report

This report provides a summary of the challenges and problems across the passenger transport system which were identified in the Background Report and by stakeholder input.

Community and Stakeholder Consultation

Over the next few months DIER will work with stakeholders to develop a Draft Greater Launceston Metropolitan Passenger Transport Plan, based on the material identified in the Background Report and Problems Identification Summary Report.

Public comment will be sought on the Draft Plan, and the input received will be used in finalising the document.

Relationship to other projects

The development of the Plan relates closely to the development of other plans occurring in the Northern Region including:
