DisabilityCare Australia Sector Development Fund Fact Sheet

In February 2010, the Commonwealth Government asked the Productivity Commission to undertake an inquiry into a national disability long-term care and support scheme. The Productivity Commission gave its final report to the Commonwealth in which was released in August 2011.The Final Report can be accessed here.

Over the next two years all state and territory governments worked with the Australian Government to develop a national disability insurance scheme now known as DisablityCare Australia.

On 2 May 2013 the Tasmanian Premier and the Prime Minister signed an agreement for the implementation of the full national disability insurance scheme (DisabilityCare Australia) in Tasmania. This will provide certainty for Tasmanians with disability, their families and carers about the support they will receive over their lifetimes. People with disability will have greater choice and control over their disability supports, and will be able to self-manage their funding packages if they wish. Transition to the full scheme will begin at the end of the current launch period in July 2016 and will be completed by July 2019.

In the meantime, on 1 July 2013, the Tasmanian and Australian Governments jointly launched the first stage of DisabilityCare Australia for 15-24 year old Tasmanians with disability. The Tasmanian Government will contribute an additional $5.2 million over the next three years, meaning that by the end of the launch, in June 2016, the Tasmanian Government will be contributing over $22 million per annum (for this age group) to the scheme.

This is an exciting initiative that will provide support to approximately 1 000 young people over the next three years as they are gradually transitioned into the scheme.
