On 6 March 2012, the Premier of Tasmania, Lara Giddings MP, announced that the Tasmanian Government would commission a White Paper on 'Tasmania's Place in the Asian Century'.
The size and rapid growth of Asian economies means that Asia will dominate the global economy in the 21st Century. This is the most transformative economic shift of power in generation and Tasmanian will need to adapt to the economic transition that will result from the growth in Asian economies.
The key purpose of the Tasmanian White Paper is to answer the following question:
How can Tasmania best position itself to capture current and emerging economic opportunities in Asia?
On 21 August 2012, the Premier of Tasmania, Lara Giddings MP, launched the Tasmania's Place in the Asian Century Issues Paper. You are invited to comment on the Issues Paper and share your views on Tasmania's place in the Asian Century.
On 21 March 2012 the Premier of Tasmania, Lara Giddings MP, announced that the Tasmanian Government has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Australian National University's Crawford School of Public Policy to establish a collaborative partnership to deliver the Tasmania's Place in the Asian Century White Paper.
The Crawford School of Public Policy is highly regarded for its expertise on the dynamic nature of Asian economic development, trading opportunities and associated matters of public policy. The collaborative partnership will be led by the Crawford School's Professor Peter Drysdale AM and draw on the extensive academic and expert resources of the Crawford School.
This expertise has been drawn on directly by the Australian Government in the development of its Asian Century White Paper led by Dr Ken Henry AC. Professor Drysdale is on the high-level Advisory Panel providing guidance on the Australian Government's Asian Century White Paper. Dr Henry is also the Executive Chair of the Crawford School's Institute of Public Policy.
On 28 September 2011 the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard MP commissioned a White Paper on Australia in the Asian Century. The White Paper will provide a national blueprint for Australia at a time of transformative economic growth and change in Asia. It will help Australia navigate the Asian Century – to seize the opportunities it offers and to meet the challenges it poses.
Dr Ken Henry AC, former Secretary of the Treasury and Special Advisor to the Primer Minister, will lead the project. The White Paper is supported by a taskforce within the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet and supported by a high-level Advisory Panel that comprises leaders from academia, business and government, including Professor Peter Drysdale AM.
The Tasmanian Premier, Lara Giddings MP and the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard MP have discussed Tasmania's White Paper and have agreed that it will complement the Australian Government's Asian Century White Paper. The Australian White Paper is expected to be released soon.

The role of the Issues Paper is to inform and invite submissions so that the Tasmanian White Paper can be effective in positioning Tasmania for the Asian Century.
