Aquatic pests can cause serious impacts. They have the potential to destroy marine and freshwater environments and to decimate recreational and commercial fisheries and other aquatic industries. Be aware of the threats your gear poses as a carrier of pests between waterways, particularly items that remain damp for long periods. The following are potential threats to Tasmania:

	Caulerpa taxifolia Has been widely used as a decorative plant in the marine aquarium trade and if released in Tasmanian waters has the potential to grow rapidly into lar...

	Didymo (Rock Snot) Didymo (Didymosphenia geminata) is a freshwater algae not present in Tasmania but recently discovered in New Zealand.

	Aquarium Caulerpa (Caulerpa taxifolia) Recorded in South Australia and New South Wales; not yet recorded in Tasmania.

	Asian Paddle Crab (Charybdis japonica) A native of the western Pacific that has not yet been recorded in Tasmania.

	Chinese Mitten Crab (Eriocheir spp.) A native of the north-west Pacific that has not yet been recorded in Australia.

	Colonial Seasquirt (Didemnum spp.) Recorded in New Zealand; not yet found in Australia.

Preventing the spread - what you can do:

Clean all the fouling from your equipment every time

Rinse your equipment before taking it to a new location

Dry your equipment before taking it to a new location.

Follow these simple steps to make sure marine pests aren't hitchhiking on your boat.

Existing pests in Tasmanian waters
See Marine Pests for information on existing marine pests, ways to help reduce their spread, and the systems in place to prevent the introduction of new marine pests to Tasmanian waters. Keep your fishing gear, dive gear and boats clean. By thoroughly cleaning surfaces and removing any water or organic material that may harbour threats you can prevent the spread of many aquatic diseases and marine pests.
