More patients will get endoscopy procedures and elective surgery through $4 million additional funding in 2012-13 in measures aimed at driving down the waiting list in public hospitals, Health Minister Michelle O'Byrne announced today.

Ms O'Byrne said the additional $4 million would help hundreds more patients get their procedures and help reduce the state's public hospital endoscopy and elective procedure waiting lists.

"The funds flow directly to the frontline - funding the services that give patients and their families greater certainty about their health."

Ms O'Byrne said the funding injection will ensure more urgent procedures can be carried out in our public hospitals.

"An endoscopy helps patients and their medical team make decisions about future treatment and for some it may provide the peace of mind that further medical attention isn't needed.

"The Budget allocation will help those patients who have waited the longest and whose clinical need is most urgent.

"The additional funding will allow hundreds of extra endoscopy and elective procedures at our four public hospitals.

"It is part of our strategy to drive down the wait list as much as possible.

"Over the past year we have made determined inroads into better management of the wait list - even though it is susceptible to fluctuation through patient demand and other factors.

"Other elective procedures will also be increased through this funding."

Ms O'Byrne said the funding for endoscopies and other elective procedures in 2012-13 would also support federal initiatives in the State Budget to reduce elective surgery wait times.

"These measures, along with budget savings relief funding also provided in today's State Budget, will ensure our public hospitals have a greater degree of flexibility to provide elective surgery," Ms O'Byrne said.
