The Minister for Primary Industries and Water Bryan Green said today a strong focus in the Budget on Tasmania's agricultural sector would sustain future growth and jobs in primary industries.

"We have seen the value of food production grow by almost $1 billion over the past decade and the Government is focussed on keeping the momentum going," Mr Green said.

Mr Green said Government's continued commitment to research, development, education and support for primary industries was crucial.

The Budget reaffirmed Government funding of almost $5 million for the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture.

This is expected to be matched by $4.4 million from the University of Tasmania and close to $10 million in industry and research grants.

"The Institute provides a level of support to the Tasmanian agricultural sector that exceeds anything provided by other universities around Australia.

"We are seeing very significant levels of investment now in our primary industries sector whether it is in irrigation, dairy or salmon production and the Institute has an important role to play in realising our potential.

Mr Green said TIA's strategic plan was closely aligned with the Tasmanian Economic Development Plan and builds on the Institute's collaboration with industry and Government agencies.

Mr Green said $18.6 million in this year's budget and funding increases over the forward estimates to maintain the State's biosecurity effort also highlighted the Government's strong focus on product integrity.

"Protecting our primary industries from pest and disease is just as important as the work we are doing to grow the sector.

"We must remain vigilant against threats to our biosecurity and quarantine borders to effectively manage the risks.

"There is no such thing as zero risk and it is essential that we maintain our discovery, diagnosis and emergency response capabilities," Mr Green said.
