Safety of Portable Generators

Tue 8 January 2013

Roy Ormerod

General Manager - Workplace Standards Tasmania

The General Manager of Workplace Standards Tasmania, Roy Ormerod, today said the Government has been receiving a number of enquiries on the safe use of portable electricity generators.

"Many people are currently without power and have resorted to using portable generators," Mr Ormerod said.

"While this is understandable in the circumstances, it's imperative that they're used safely.

"Under no circumstances should they be connected to the existing household wiring.

"That may create an electrical safety hazard to the homeowner and emergency personnel.

"Those people who were fortunate to keep their houses in the areas decimated by the fires shouldn't expose themselves to further danger.

"Refrigerators and other electrical appliances must only be plugged directly into portable generators - but always read the manufactures operating instructions carefully," he said.
