East Derwent Highway - Baskerville Road to Cassidy Road - Road Improvements

This section of road on the East Derwent Highway between Baskerville Road and Cassidy Road has been identified as needing safety improvements.  The Road Safety Council approved funding under the State Government's Road Safety Levy for a road improvement project for this area.

The objective of the project is to improve safety by improving the road alignment in the vicinity of the Cassidy Road junction, providing sealed shoulders on both sides of the East Derwent Highway for approximately 1.3kms, and providing basic right turn passing facilities at the Cassidy Road, Melane Road and Baskerville Road junctions.

Works will require reclamation of part of the River Derwent Foreshore.

Location of Works

The project is located on the East Derwent Highway in the vicinity of Cassidys Bay.

Impact of works

All construction will be completed during weekdays at non-peak times under an approved traffic management plan.

Delays to the travelling public can be expected in the vicinity of the road works.

Current status

  • The contractor is Downer EDi Works Pty Ltd
  • Construction works commenced in March 2011.
  • 80% of the project works are now complete.
  • Settlement surveys show that minor settlement is still occurring.
  • The completion of works has been deferred until January 2013 to allow sufficient time for road material to settle and to ensure a good end product.
  • Improvements will be made in early 2012 to the road surface of the East Derwent Highway at Cassidys Bay to improve the safety of this section of road for winter 2012.
