IPv6 Transition Strategy

The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) has designated Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) as the successor to version 4 for general use on the Internet. IPv6 has a much larger address space than IPv4, which provides greater flexibility in allocating addresses and routing traffic.

Development of a strategy for Tasmanian Government transition to IPv6 is being coordinated by the Office of eGovernment, Department of Premier and Cabinet in consultation with Tasmanian Government agencies. The purpose of the strategy is to:

  • Provide agencies with a common approach to making the transition from IPv4 to IPv6
  • Establish agreement on some critical milestones to be achieved during the transition
  • Reduce the potential for duplication of planning activities by agencies
  • Maximise the opportunities presented by IPv6 technology.
