Industry and Enterprise Development

Screen Tasmania has practitioner development funds available to enhance professional development and increase employment outcomes, with an emphasis on key creative roles. Alongside bespoke mentoring in order to provide direction and support for emerging practitioners on their career pathways, there is also ad hoc support available for Tasmanian screen practitioners to attend conferences, festivals and specialist workshops, or to undertake attachments.

There is also support available for Tasmanian screen practitioners to ensure consistent access to national and international markets and events which are able to advance their careers and projects.

Screen Tasmania recognises that for Tasmanian resident production companies to grow, funding may be required to support them as they enhance their sustainability by expanding business activities and increasing their production capacity.

Applications can be made to the following funds designed to develop Tasmanian individuals and enterprises:

Projects and applicants must satisfy a number of eligibility criteria before submitting an application and should also read the Screen Tasmania General Guidelines and Terms of Trade, both available in pdf format.

4.1 silverScreen

This fund is designed to provide bespoke career pathway support and direct professional experience for emerging Tasmanian screen practitioners in key creative roles. This fund recognises the importance of writers, directors and producers in building the screen industry in Tasmania.

A structured professional development program will be devised which will include:

  • a short courses or masterclasses and associated travel
  • a twelve month membership of the relevant national organisation (SPAA, ADG, AWG)
  • attendance at the relevant national organisation's conference 
  • a twelve month subscription to Screen Hub

4.1a silverScreen Gold Pass

This fund is designed to provide direct professional experience for emerging and experienced Tasmanian writers, directors and producers. It supports four to twelve week attachments with an interstate or overseas production company working in drama or comedy for film or television.

4.2 Professional Development Fund

The growth of Tasmanian creative and craft talent, and a greater number of highly skilled practitioners, is vital for the long-term growth of the screen industry in Tasmania.

This fund provides ad hoc support for Tasmanian screen practitioners to advance their existing knowledge and skills, and expand their industry networks by attending conferences, festivals, specialist workshops or masterclasses, or undertaking attachments.

4.3 Enterprise Development Fund - This fund is not offered in 2012-13

Screen Tasmania recognises the need for Tasmanian resident production companies to have certainty and flexibility in planning business activities, as well as consistent access to the marketplace.

The Enterprise Development Fund supports a structured enterprise development program to assist Tasmanian resident production companies that are seeking to enhance their sustainability by expanding business activities and increasing their production capacity.

Companies can apply for a combination of the following activities:

  • support to pursue a business expansion strategy
  • business mentor support
  • engagement of a consultant executive producer
  • targeted marketing activities

4.4 Business Travel

It is important for Tasmanian screen practitioners to have consistent access to national and international markets and events which are able to advance their careers and projects.

Screen Tasmania provides grant funding to Tasmanian screen practitioners to attend key national and international market events or market meetings, as well as festivals and award ceremonies on an ad-hoc basis.

International funding is provided to help Tasmanian practitioners to forge critical overseas networks and build international profiles, and to generate international sales, marketing and financing opportunities by helping to access potential investors, sales agents and distributors.

Travel can be interstate or international, for the purposes of, but not limited to, attending:

  • market meetings, markets or conferences to progress projects into production
  • recognised  film festivals or awards ceremonies in which the applicant has been selected or invited to compete
  • international pitching forums or competitions

While there are a number of specific eligibility criteria, all applicants will be expected to show that they have at least three substantially developed, market ready projects or they must be a key creative in any project featured in a recognised festival.
