Macquarie Point Development Project
In June 2012 the Australian Government provided a $50 million grant to Tasmania to support the remediation of the Macquarie Point railyards site and the redevelopment of Brooke Street Pier in Hobart.
The railyards site, which is approximately 8.4 hectares in size, has a long and varied history and is currently used for a range of industrial purposes, all of which will be relocated over the next 12 to 18 months.
A condition of the Australian Government grant is that a corporation be established to oversee the remediation and redevelopment works. Legislation to establish the corporation was passed by the Tasmanian Parliament in November 2012 and received Royal Assent on 11 December 2012.
Work to establish the corporation and its board – which will be subject to the Macquarie Point Development Corporation Act 2012 – is being progressed by a steering committee. The steering committee is also overseeing the early planning works related to the future remediation of the site, as well as the consultation process required to fully explore the opportunities it presents.
The boundaries of the railyards site are shown on the map below.

Engaging the public and raising awareness of the site, its location and potential future uses is an important focus of the project, as it will have a major influence on Hobart’s future economic and social growth.
A community and stakeholder consultation program commenced in November 2012 and will continue in 2013, enabling the community to engage in the process and work towards a shared vision for the site.
