Minister for Energy and Resources

The Minister for Energy and Resources Bryan Green today welcomed unanimous support from the Legislative Council for major reforms of Tasmania's electricity industry.

Mr Green said the reforms will restructure the State's energy sector to help keep downward pressure on power prices.

"This reform package will deliver on the Governments objective of ensuring Tasmanians have access to the lowest sustainable electricity bills," Mr Green said.

"I commend the Legislative Council on recognising the importance of these reforms to the state and the benefits they will bring to Tasmanians.

"The reforms will help Tasmania prosper and ensure we have a viable and competitive electricity industry that is reliable and an asset to the State. Importantly, the core hydroelectric and network electricity assets that Tasmania has invested in for generations will remain in our ownership," Mr Green said.

Further legislation will be required next year once detailed work on the key elements of the reform program is complete.
