Welcome to the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies.
IMAS was created by the University of Tasmania in 2010 to encourage collaborative research in marine and Antarctic science between various parts of the University, CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research, the Australian Antarctic Division and other agencies.
IMAS aspires to be the leading institution for the study of high-latitude marine and terrestrial science.
The new $45 million IMAS building on Hobart's waterfront is an initiative of the Australian Government being conducted as part of the Nation-building Economic Stimulus Plan.

IMAS staff teach into undergraduate science degrees, and graduate diploma, honours, coursework masters, research masters and PhD programs. Students study a range of topics relevant to Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. A full understanding of these fascinating, unique and constantly changing environments is vital to Australia and the World. IMAS provides undergraduate, honours and postgraduate-level training in all areas pertaining to the southern polar regions.
