The following information may be useful for any public education opportunities you may have. 

The SES in Tasmania

  • Established in 1976
  • Previously known as the Tasmania Civil Defence Organisation
  • 34 volunteer units
  • approx 500 volunteers
  • 23 permanent staff
  • 3 regional offices

Road Crash Rescue

  • 21 units accredited for road crash rescue
  • SES units attended 298 road crash rescues in 2003-2004
  • This is a significant increase on previous 2 years

Storm Damage

  • 29 units accredited for storm damage response
  • SES units responded to 95 storm and flood events in 2003-2004

Driver Reviver

  • 3 locations around Tasmania in 2003-2004
  • New site added in 2005
  • Over 75 volunteers involved annually
  • Over 9500 cups of tea/coffee served each year
  • Major sponsors are Arnotts (biscuits) and Bushells Tea
  • Busiest period is Easter

General Statistics

  • More than 38,000 hours of community service contributed by SES volunteers including training and operations
  • More than 500 operational call outs per year
  • SES volunteers involved in 35 searches
