Historic Cultural Heritage Act

The purpose of the Act is to promote the identification, assessment, protection and conservation of places having historic cultural heritage significance and to establish the Tasmanian Heritage Council.

The Act also includes the requirements to:

The definition of "conservation", in relation to a place, includes:

  1. the retention of the historic cultural heritage significance of the place; and
  2. any maintenance, preservation, restoration, reconstruction or adaptation of the place.

The definition of "place" includes:

  1. a site, precinct or parcel of land;
  2. any building or part of a building;
  3. any shipwreck;
  4. any item in or on, or historically or physically associated or connected with, a site, precinct or parcel of land where the primary importance of the item derives in part from its association with that site, precinct or parcel of land; and
  5. any equipment, furniture, fittings and articles in or on, or historically or physically associated or connected with, any building or item.
