The sustainable management of the environment and natural resources underpins healthy local communities and economies.  As planning authorities councils must ensure that the use and development of land is appropriate and well managed.  Councils also have a responsibility to look after land which they own or manage by ensuring that activities are not only sustainable and take into account local conditions, but also comply with relevant legislation.  Importantly, councils provide essential support to a range of local community based activities and initiatives.

Our goals in the environment policy area are to:

  • Ensure that local government's views are heard and considered by other spheres of government
  • Enhance local government's understanding and knowledge of environmental issues
  • Promote awareness of sustainability principles across all areas of local government operations
  • Ensure the provision of resources necessary for local government to meet its responsibilities for environmental management

Priorities include:

  • Environmental Legislation
  • Air and Noise Quality
  • Waste Management
  • Natural Resource Management
  • Climate Change
